What Mangal dosha is

Mangal dosha, also called Kuja dosha or being Manglik, is a placement of Mars in the birth chart. Mars is the planet of heat, drive and conflict, and when it sits in a house that governs marriage or home life, tradition reads it as friction in married life unless something in the chart softens it.

The houses that carry the dosha are the 1st (the self), 2nd (family and speech), 4th (home and comfort), 7th (the spouse), 8th (the longevity of the marriage) and 12th (the marriage bed and losses). South Indian practice counts the 2nd house and North Indian practice often leaves it out. This calculator counts it, so a 2nd-house Mars shows up as a dosha here and may not on a North Indian chart.

How this calculator decides

Your birth time is converted to Universal Time with the time zone rules of that date, and Swiss Ephemeris gives the sidereal positions of the ascendant, the Moon, Mars and Jupiter with the Lahiri ayanamsa. Houses are whole signs counted from the ascendant.

Mars in a dosha house counted from the ascendant is a full Mangal dosha. Mars in a dosha house counted from the Moon, but not from the ascendant, is a partial one. Mars anywhere else means no dosha. The same rules run on each partner inside our kundli matching.

What cancels it

Classical texts list several conditions that temper or cancel the dosha. This calculator checks four of them: Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio), Mars exalted in Capricorn, Jupiter conjunct Mars, and Jupiter in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Moon.

The strongest cancellation is a partner who is also Manglik. Two Manglik charts are traditionally held to offset each other, which is why the dosha is a matching question more than a personal verdict. Our free kundli matching calculator checks both partners together.

Why the birth time matters

The ascendant changes sign about every two hours, so an error of an hour or two in the birth time can move Mars from the 7th house to the 6th or 8th and change the result completely. Mars itself moves slowly, about half a degree a day, so the date and place matter far less than the time.

If the result surprises you, check the time on your birth certificate before you act on it, and look at the factors the calculator lists rather than the label alone.

Checking a match? The free kundli matching calculator runs the same Mangal dosha check on both partners, with the 36-guna score.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if I am Manglik?

Enter your date, time and place of birth. The calculator finds where Mars sits from your ascendant and from your Moon, tells you whether the dosha is full, partial or absent, and lists any classical cancellations present in your chart.

Which houses cause Mangal dosha?

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the ascendant. Counted from the Moon, the same houses give a partial dosha. Some traditions do not count the 2nd house.

What is the difference between full and partial Mangal dosha?

Full means Mars is in a dosha house counted from the ascendant, the main reference in Vedic astrology. Partial means Mars is in a dosha house only when counted from the Moon. A partial dosha is treated as milder.

Can Mangal dosha be cancelled?

Yes. Mars in its own sign or exalted, Jupiter with Mars or in a kendra from the Moon, and a partner who is also Manglik are the cancellations most texts agree on. This calculator checks the chart-based ones and shows them under the result.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Traditionally the concern is a strong, uncancelled dosha on one side only. Many charts that read as Manglik carry a cancellation, and the matching also weighs the other 36 guna points. Run both charts through the kundli matching calculator before deciding anything.

Does Mangal dosha end after age 28?

That is a common folk belief, not a rule from the classical texts. The placement of Mars does not change with age. What changes is the dasha running, which can make the same placement matter more or less in a given period.

Do you store my birth details?

No. The calculation runs on our server and the details are not saved, and no account is created.
